Ascension Cathedral, Tsarevets Fortress, Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria - 2022 Danube River cruise. The Ascension Cathedral (Cathedral of the Ascension of the Lord) was built on the remains of a Roman basilica. It was reconstructed in 1981 and the interior murals by Bulgarian artist Teofan Sokerov were completed in 1985. The frescoes and murals depict the history of the Bulgarian state and include many Christian references.
